James Troy Armand’s passion for the culinary arts, especially donuts, began at the young age of 14. He embarked on his journey in the food industry, leaving his paperboy days behind. His first culinary adventure led him to Ms. Helen and Ms. Marilyn, two former nuns who owned a local Westbank donut franchise. While aspiring to become a donut cutter, James initially took on the role of a donut fryer. With no formal training, his keen eye and dedication allowed him to quickly master the craft. Today, his hand-cut glazed donuts are the top-selling signature item across all Joe’s Café locations.
Over the years, James explored various career paths, but the siren calls of the restaurant business, particularly the love of donuts, always drew him back. In 1988, James and his wife, Stacey Favre Armand, realized their dream by purchasing their first donut restaurant on Lapalco Boulevard in Marrero, Louisiana. Together with their four sons, they developed the cherished recipes and established the core values of Joe’s Café. These values revolve around the principles of hard work, unwavering dedication to quality ingredients, and an unrelenting commitment to customer service.
The legacy continues with James’ eldest son, Justin Armand, who joined the family business as a partner in 2009. Armed with a degree in Business Communications from Southeastern University, Justin opened his first Joe’s Café on Barataria Boulevard in Marrero in 2011. This marked the start of an exciting journey as they soon added another location on Causeway Boulevard in Metairie. In 2017, Joe’s Café made its mark on the Westbank Expressway in Westwego, Louisiana. The fifth Joe’s Café welcomed guests in Terrytown in July 2018, and the family was thrilled to see the demand for their offerings grow. The couples second son, Troy Armand and his wife Melissa, opened the first franchise location in Gretna in 2022.
For James and his family, the core of their business lies in serving quality products while preserving that authentic, homemade flavor in every dish they offer. The Joe’s Café motto, “Joe’s Knows…”, signifies their expertise:
